Na een ver-van-ideale-situatie met de zeer gewaardeerde Herman Coppens als algemeen rijksarchivaris ad interim na het wegvallen van de vorige volwaardige algemeen rijksarchivaris Ernest Persoons hebben we nu eindelijk een nieuwe volwaardig benoemde algemeen rijksarchivaris. Zo wist De Morgen het vandaag op een nogal tendensieuze manier te berichten. De ondertitel van de krantenkop “Tien directeurs worden dan eindelijk toch benoemd” luidde “Marc Verwilghen promoot kabinetsmedewerker tot Algemeen Rijksarchivaris“.

Na een calvarietocht van meer dan twee jaar krijgt de aanwervingsprocedure voor de directeurs van de tien fwi’s of federale wetenschappelijke instellingen (Koninklijke Bibliotheek, Musea voor Kunst en Geschiedenis, KMI…) haar beslag. Binnen de federale regering is er een consensus over de namen bereikt, zo vernam De Morgen uit goede bron. Sommige daarvan zullen ongetwijfeld kwaad bloed zetten.

Last but not least: Karel Velle, kabinetsmedewerker bij Verwilghen, wordt aangesteld tot algemeen rijksarchivaris.

Ook Karel Velle, ex-Rijksarchief en momenteel werkzaam op het kabinet-Verwilghen, gaat een bank vooruit. Net als Serck (KIK) had Velle aanvankelijk een C (‘minder geschikt’) achter zijn naam. Nu hij deze keer een B (‘geschikt’) heeft en dus geschikt is, nlijkt dat voldoende om Ernest Persoons op te volgen als rijksarchivaris. Het parcours van Velle vertoont alvast gelijkenis met dat van zijn omstreden voorganger. Persoons werd in 1987 vanuit het kabinet van wijlen Daniël Coens geparachuteerd.

Redelijk negatief gekleurd als je het mij vraagt … in alle geval, ik denk dat we vooral blij mogen zijn dat we weer een volmachtigd algemeen rijksarchivaris hebben. Weinig mensen zullen mij hier in tegenspreken denk ik. Tijd om Herman Coppens te bedanken voor zijn inspanningen en werkzaamheden ad interim en Karel Velle te verwelkomen als nieuw algemeen rijksarchivaris. Zonder dralen … vooruit met de archivistiek …
